Armed military men have rescued some staff of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) after they were locked up at the University for Development (UDS) campus in Tamale.
NEDCo staff went to the campus on Thursday, February 02, to disconnect the power supply in the school over a debt owed the company.
According to the Loss Control Supervisor of NEDCo, Samuel Kumi, the university owes electricity bills totalling GHS447,000.
Due to this, NEDCo decided to change the university’s postpaid meter to a prepaid meter so that the university gets power when they purchase credit.
The company deployed workers to go ahead with the disconnection after the university authorities protested the new arrangement.
After the disconnection, the security at the university, locked up the main gate to block their exit.
They were held hostage in the school with condition that they restore power, or else remain locked up.
The matter was reported to their management and the military was called in for their rescue.
Meanwhile, the situation remains tense. The university is expected to pay a portion of the arrears accumulated before power is restored.
