Migration Of Fulani Herdsmen From The Sahara To Ghana Poses Security Threat – Dr. Musah Barry

The General Secretary of the Tabital Pulaaki International, Ghana Chapter Mr. Yakubu Musah Barry, has said the risk involved in the movement of Fulani Herdsmen from the Sahara area to Ghana during the dry season for cattle grazing could pose a security threat.

He noted that the situation needed careful handling.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Yakubu Musah Barry indicated that the Fulani herdsmen must secure entry to Ghana by using the right channels such as seeking a permit from the authorities. That is a basis for an effective organization that allows such a migration to be smooth and for peaceful coexistence among crop farmers, traditional overlords, and nomadic herdsmen.

Yakubu Musah Barry said the Ghana Immigration Service should be blamed for the selective and partial treatment of Fulani herdsmen, adding that such tendencies are tantamount to the marginalization that affects the peace and freedom of the Fulani herdsmen who settled in the country.

He pleaded with the Ghana Immigration Service and other security services to ensure equal treatment of cattle herders and indigenes to foster unity and peace in their environment.

Mr. Yakubu Musah Barry detailed how the Fulani Herdsmen settled in Ghana over 400 years ago.

According to him, the debate as to whether their claim to citizenship is valid or not may be settled by the Constitution which defines who a citizen of Ghana is.

He said some of them settled in Ghana long ago before the Constitution was drafted or came into force.
