The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has underscored the economic and consumer protection importance of strict metering standards, describing quality assurance as fundamental to trust and fairness within Ghana’s electricity market.
Speaking during a working visit to the Energy Metre Testing Laboratory of the Ghana Standards Authority, the Minister stressed that metering accuracy is not merely a technical issue but a cornerstone of financial integrity in the power sector.
“Quality standards are not just technical requirements; they are the backbone of trust and fairness between consumers and utility companies,” he stated.
The visit forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to strengthen quality assurance systems and reinforce public confidence in electricity billing mechanisms.
Accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission of Ghana, Ms. Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, the delegation observed testing procedures designed to ensure the accuracy, safety and reliability of energy meters deployed nationwide.
From a financial and economic standpoint, accurate metering plays a critical role in revenue mobilisation for utility providers, cost transparency for consumers, and overall sector sustainability.
Inaccurate or poorly calibrated meters can distort billing, trigger disputes, and weaken investor confidence in the power distribution chain.
Dr. Jinapor commended the laboratory’s technical team for maintaining precision and professionalism, noting that strong institutional collaboration is essential to safeguarding consumer interests and reinforcing accountability across the energy value chain.
