Memphis Depay discusses Barcelona future amid renewed Man Utd links

Memphis Depay has admitted his future at Barcelona is uncertain amid rumours of a potential return to former club Manchester United.

Memphis joined Barcelona as a free agent in the summer of 2021 after impressing at Lyon and enjoyed a solid first season at Camp Nou, getting 13 goals in 38 appearances.

Despite that output, he dropped down the pecking order at the club with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha being signed in the summer.

The Dutchman looked as though he could leave during the summer just gone and was linked with a move to Juventus in particular, as well as Manchester United, but ultimately opted to stay put.

Memphis is currently on course to be out of contract at the of the season. He could even leave Camp Nou in January and the sudden departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has left his former club in need of even more extra bodies up front, raising speculation of a possible reunion.

Memphis has admitted it is far from certain he will remain at his Barcelona, although he isn’t prepared to think about his club future until after the World Cup.

“I don’t want to think about the past, I’m focused on the World Cup. I also don’t want to think beyond this competition. I don’t know what will happen after the World Cup,” he said.

Memphis has been out injured for almost two months and wasn’t fit enough to start the Netherlands’ opening match against Senegal, which ended 2-0 to the Dutch.

The forward says he has fully recovered now though and is keen to help his nation improve.

“I am very happy to play again. I have needed a long time to reappear. It hasn’t been easy mentally, but I’ve worked hard to get there and I’ve played half an hour. It’s a step. It’s incredible to play football again,” he said.

“If you don’t play well but win 2-0 against the African champion, you can’t not be happy, but we have to improve. Now we are happy, but from tomorrow it is time to think about Ecuador. The injury has been hard, but I’m already recovered and I’m enjoying a World Cup.”
