The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially closed nominations for its presidential primaries.
A vetting committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Mike Oquaye, will begin their screening from the 3rd to the 6th of July, 2023.
In the build-up to the contest, The Ghana Report brings you a summary of the profiles of each candidate.
1. Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto
He is a Ghanaian agricultural economist and politician born on October 19, 1949. He holds a doctorate in Agricultural Economics and was the Minister of Food and Agriculture until his resignation in 2023.
2.Kwabena Agyei Agyapong
He is a civil engineer and politician born on March 6, 1962. A civil engineer and former Press Secretary to former President Kufuor. He previously contested the party’s presidential primary in 2007 and won the position of General Secretary in 2014 before being suspended.
3. Joe Ghartey
A lawyer and former MP for Essikado-Ketan. He has served as the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice and was the immediate past Minister of Railways Development.
Mr Ghartey hails from Shama, in the Western Region of Ghana, born on June 15 1961, in Accra.
4.Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen
An economist and lawyer who served under former President John Agyekum Kufuor between 2003 and 2007. He has contested the NPP flagbearership three times, finishing as the first runner-up in all three contests. Born on October 3, 1955, he served as a Minister for Trade and Industry from 2017 until his resignation this year.
He also served as the ambassador of Ghana to the United States of America between 2001 and 2003.
5. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
Born on October 7, 1963, Dr Bawumia is an economist and a former central banker currently serving as the Vice President. He has been the running mate of the NPP’s presidential candidate since 2008 and was the lead witness for the petitioners in the 2012 presidential election petition.
6. Kennedy Agyapong
A businessman and the incumbent MP for Assin Central. He has been an MP since 2000 and is currently the Chairperson of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament. He was born on June 16, 1960, and was first elected an MP in 2000 to the seat of Assin North.
7. Boakye Agyarko
A banker, economist, and former Minister of Energy. He was appointed National Campaign Manager of the NPP in the 2012 presidential election. Born in 1956, he was also the vice president of the Bank of New York.
8. Francis Addai-Nimoh
Born March 23, 1965, Francis Addai-Nimoh is a politician and a member of the Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He represented the Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party from 2013 to 2017.
9. Kofi Konadu Apraku
He is a three-time Member of Parliament and was the fourth candidate to pick the form on the first day of the opening of nominations. He is an experienced academician and business consultant. He was the Member of Parliament for the Offinso North constituency in the fourth parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He was the Minister for Regional Cooperation and NEPAD in John Kufuor’s administration from 2003 to 2006. He also served as the Minister of Trade and Industry under Kufour from 2001 to 2003.
10.Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku
Mr Kwadwo Poku is a businessman and energy expert who has worked on various projects for years at different levels in the energy sector.
He also serves as a Board Director of Multinational companies such as Pan African Capital Ghana Limited and FIFC Management and Development Limited.
He was the Country Director for GASOP OIL (GHANA) LIMITED from June 2002 to September 2012.
