The Ministry for the Interior has declared May 1, 2023, a statutory public holiday nationwide.
A press statement signed by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, said, “The general public is hereby informed that Monday, May 1, 2023, which marks May Day (Workers Day), is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
May 1 is marked as May Day or International Workers Day worldwide. It is a day set aside to celebrate the contributions of workers to the development of the country and to advocate better working conditions and welfare for workers.
Durbars are expected to be held by workers’ unions across the country.
The Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga, will host the national parade for this year’s May Day celebration.
A cross-section of Ghanaian workers are expected to gather in the town for the commemoration under the theme “Protecting incomes and pensions in an era of economic crisis: Our responsibility.”
A statement issued by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, Dr Yaw Baah, said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would be the special guests.
