Many roads “left undone”—Suhuyini fires NPP government

The Deputy Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has criticised the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government over bad roads in the Northern Region.

Disputing claims that the previous government had completed a majority of roads in Tamale, Suhuyini was of the view that while some roads had been constructed, much more remained abandoned.

“I think it is debatable to say that the previous government did a chunk of the roads in Tamale. They did some roads, and that is not in doubt, like many other governments in the past, but a lot more is left undone,” he stated when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee to be screened for the portfolio he has been nominated to fill.

Elaborating on the poor roads in the country, he cited other locations in the country in dire need of road infrastructure improvements.

“It is a fact that it is not only a problem peculiar to the Sagnarigu Municipality, of which Tamale North is part. It is a fact around the country that almost every part of Ghana still requires a lot of roads,” he added.

The past NPP government and their NDC counterparts have been trading arguments over the administration with the best records in terms of road infrastructure.

In November 2024, former President Akufo-Addo touted his achievements during the commissioning of the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra.

He claimed his administration had built more roads and interchanges than any other in the country’s history, pointing to the wide-ranging scope of completed projects.

“In the Greater Accra Region alone, we have successfully completed projects such as the Pokuase Interchange, the Tema Motorway Interchange Phase I, the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase I, the East Legon Underpass, and now, the Flower Pot Interchange,” he detailed.

Mr Akufo-Addo added that his administration’s efforts extended beyond the capital.

He drew attention to major infrastructure projects underway and completed in other regions, aimed at connecting the entire nation.

“Beyond Accra, we have also delivered the first-ever interchanges in the Eastern Region at Suhum and in the Northern Region at Tamale,” he highlighted. “Each of these projects speaks to our commitment to a Ghana that is continually advancing.”
