A red Scania Marcopolo bus with registration number GW 9090-18 and a truck have been involved in a severe road accident, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries on the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The crash occurred early Friday at about 4:00 am at Atwemamena, a commuated between Bunso and Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region.
The bus, travelling from Kumasi towards Accra, collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident was severe, which claimed the lives of both the bus driver and his mate and injured several other passengers.
“Several passengers, including the bus driver and mate, lost their lives. I have seen a chopped leg in the mangled front of the bus. Victims have been transported to Suhum Government Hospital for emergency care,” an eyewitness recounted.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 11 pm.
The deceased, all women, included a sports teacher and national service personnel from Yilo Krobo Senior High School.
Their Toyota Corolla, with registration number GR 901-21, collided head-on with a pickup truck with registration number GV 1263-20.
According to sources, the driver of the pickup truck allegedly engaged in a wrong overtaking in a curve, leading to the fatal collision that killed the two on the spot.
Information gathered indicated that a Sprinter bus with registration GT 5873-09, fully loaded from Kaneshie to Takoradi, lost control after one of its back tyres burst.
The driver struggled to maintain control of the vehicle and veered off the road, crashing into a tree.
Two people reportedly died on the spot.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene to assist the injured passengers.
Several passengers who sustained various degrees of injury were transported to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for medical treatment.
