Manhyia hospital nurses embark on indefinite strike over nurse’s abuse

Patients at the Manhyia Government Hospital have been stranded following the indefinite strike action over nurse abuse.

Relatives of some patients in the surgical ward have been asked to take them home until the nurses resume work.

The strike action comes after the expiration of the 72-hour deadline issued for the immediate removal of the NSS Ashanti Regional Director Alex Opoku-Mensah.

Mr Opoku-Mensah was captured on tape hurling unprintable words at a female nurse at the Manhyia Hospital for undermining the authority of his daughter, who also works at the said hospital.

Running to the defence of his daughter, the director in question barged into the hospital’s surgical ward and verbally abused and threatened the nurse.

In the said audio, the angry NSS director is heard questioning the competence of the said nurse and further threatening to get her fired from her post.

He subsequently apologised after his conduct was widely condemned by the majority of Ghanaians on social media.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Mr Opoku-Mensah said, “I do apologise for any mishap and assure all, there shall not be a repetition of such.”

“I understand the disappointment and appreciate the inconvenience my action has caused the public and the Nursing Fraternity and Manhyia Hospital,” he said.
