Residents of Abeka in the Greater Accra Region have been left in shock after a man, Collins Jones, died after setting himself on fire.
This followed his failed attempt at killing his wife in the presence of their three children on Monday, May 6, 2024.
Narrating the incident, his wife, 38-year-old Martina Jones, said this comes after several threats by the husband to kill her and commit suicide.
She said Collins attacked her with a pestle in her sleep at 3 am on Monday, which left her bleeding profusely from a gush on her forehead.
He allegedly continued to grab her neck and strangled her while she gasped for breath.
She, however, managed to break free from his deadly grip and fled the room.
“I have not wronged him in any way to warrant such an attack. One of our children saw the pestle hidden under our bed and showed it to me. I enquired where the pestle was from, and he said it was placed there by his father.

“I asked what it was going to be used for and he said probably his father will be sending it to work. When he hit me with the pestle at night, I wondered if the intention was to kill me, so I struggled with him and managed to take the pestle from him. After moments of struggle, I managed to escape the situation,” she said.
Martina said she ran to some neighbours who rushed her to a nearby health facility for medical attention.
In his bid to evade arrest, Collins Jones locked all doors to their apartment and set himself ablaze in their room.
Neighbours who arrived at the scene found him critically injured and rushed him to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
