Man killed at Peace Council meeting at Sanguli
A man has been fatally wounded after unidentified gunmen invaded a meeting organised by the Peace Council ahead of the 2020 elections.
The deceased, Francis Nyanful, died from his wounds after he was rushed to the hospital. Other details are yet to be confirmed.
Local officers of the Peace Council in Saboba in the Northern region had organised the meeting Thursday to help broker peace in Sanguli.
Revered Father Nicholas who led the delegation said the local peace council delegation had been touring communities trying to urge Konkombas to keep the peace.
A chieftaincy dispute broke out at least five years between two gates of the Konkomba ethnic group. One gate had rejected the Ya-Na’s selection of a chief.
The deceased belongs to one of the factions, GBC has reported in an interview monitored by theghanareport.com.
The Peace Council had organised a meeting with stakeholders within the community, including chiefs.
But a man linked to one of the factions had expressed displeasure about the holding of the meeting without his knowledge, Father Nicholas has said.
The man, whose identity he did not disclose, had threatened that ‘if you don’t leave, there would be bloodshed. He repeated that twice’.
According to Revered Father Nicholas, before he could disperse the meeting at an EP church, gun shots pierced through the venue.
The assailants fired multiple times. The deceased was caught in the fire. He passed on while he was transported to the hospital.
Several others were also injured.
Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed has told reporters, security has been beefed up since the incident.
