The Tarkwa Circuit Court has handed a 15-year jail sentence to a man who defiled a six-year-old girl on a cocoa farm at Wassa Asikuma in the Amenfi East District in the Western Region.
The accused, Kwabena Mohammed, pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement and the court, presided over by Mr Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, convicted him accordingly.
Facts
According to a Ghana News Agency (GNA) report, Police Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, told the court that the complainant who resided in a cottage near Wassa Asikuma reported to the police at 7 p.m on October 1, 2017, that he left the victim who is his daughter and her two siblings in the house for the farm with his wife.
The prosecutor said when the complainant and his wife returned, they were informed by the victim that Mohammed had visited in their absence and requested a cup of water to quench his thirst.
She said in the victim’s narration of events to the complainant and his wife, she is reported to have said: “After l handed the water over to the accused person, he forcefully dragged me to a nearby cocoa farm and had unprotected sex with me after which he gave me 50 Gp and left.”
Chief Inspector Anaman said the complainant said he became furious and they began scouting for Mohammed but could not find him.
The case was subsequently reported to the Wassa Akropong Police and a medical form was issue to the complainant to take the victim to hospital for treatment and obtain a medical report.
Arrest
In the early hours of October 3, 2017, Inspector Anaman said the complainant and the victim visited Wassa Asikuma and while there, they came across the accused whom the victim identified as the one who had defiled her.
The complainant, with the help of others, arrested Mohammed and took him to the Wassa Akropong Police Station.
