Man found dead in galamsey pit

A man believed to be in his 60s has been found dead in an illegal mining (galamsey) pit at Akyem Oda Asomdwe in the Eastern Region. 

The deceased has been identified as Kujo Dzijro.

Information gathered indicates that he was a security guard at a galamsey site at Akyem Oda Asomdwe and was on duty on the day of the incident.

It is unclear what led to his death.

According to some residents, the man came to the galamsey site looking healthy; hence, they found it strange that he was found dead in the pit.

The police have commenced an investigation into the matter.

In a similar vein, a 5-year-old girl drowned in an abandoned galamsey pit while playing with her friends at Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the children were playing near the pit when the girl accidentally fell into the abandoned galamsey pit, which was filled with water.

Upon realizing the danger, her friends immediately reported the incident to some community members, prompting a desperate search effort.

The youth of Manso Nkwanta visited the scene and launched a search that lasted several hours.

Despite their determined efforts, the search ended in sorrow as they eventually found the girl’s lifeless body.

Residents have repeatedly called for measures to secure these hazardous sites, which remain a threat to the community, particularly to children.
