A young man believed to be in his early 20s has been found hanging from a cocoa tree at Latutu, in Akyem Tontro, of the Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The deceased, before his death, arrived in the community with his father from Sefwi to visit a family member a week ago.

Subsequently, the father of the deceased left Latutu to attend to some personal duties at Somanya.

On Wednesday morning (July 3, 2024), the young man (the deceased) dressed nicely, took his bag and stepped out, but his body was found later that evening, around 5:00 pm, hanging on a cocoa farm.

The cocoa farm owner, Mr Emmanuel Abayatey, found the body of the deceased.

According to reports, the young man tied a sponge to a branch of the cocoa tree and stood on a gallon to hang himself.

The assemblyman for the Osiem-Afigya Electoral Area, Stephen Tetteh, confirmed the incident and stated that a police criminal investigation officer from Tafo District Police Command was at the scene to take inventory of the crime scene.

Stephen Tetteh lamented the lack of transportation, which forced them to carry the body to the roadside to find a tricycle to take it to the mortuary of Akyem Tafo Government Hospital.

The police have commenced an investigation into the matter.

This incident comes after a man believed to be in his late twenties, Joseph Amaley, allegedly committed suicide after squandering some money meant for the renovation of a family house at Eshiem in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region.

He was found hanging on Friday, June 28, 2024, at a ceramic company at Eshiem.

Assemblymember for Eshiem Joseph Bismarck Eshun confirmed the incident.

He indicated that the deceased was working with the company a few months ago but decided to resign after his uncle, living abroad, started sending him money for a family-building project.

According to the assembly member, Joseph Amaley’s uncle, who was sending him money from abroad, is set to return to Ghana to inspect the project.

“It is time for his uncle to return to Ghana, but he had spent all the project money, which got him thinking. He came back to the company and re-applied. He was employed and had started working, but his deeds still haunted him,” he said.

Information gathered indicates that Joseph Amaley, before his death, sent a message to one of his friends that he was not happy with what he had done, and so he may take his life.

Joseph Amaley’s lifeless body was later found hanging at the premises of the company that day.
