The Suhum Police Command has arrested a yet-to-be-identified man for allegedly selling adulterated sugar and vegetable oil in the Eastern Region.
He reportedly added sand to the bags of sugar for his unsuspecting buyers.
The suspect also filled 25 litre gallons with water and splashed the surfaces with vegetable cooking oil.
However, he ran out of luck after a woman who purchased a bag of adulterated sugar reported it to the police.
Upon investigations, the police discovered a warehouse at Doctor Marvel, a suburb of Suhum, with large quantities of the contaminated products.
One suspect was arrested during the operation while his accomplices got away.
Further intelligence gathered revealed that the suspects transport the commodities outside the municipality to sell at reduced prices.
As a clever attempt to prevent the buyer from spotting the fake product, the seller will open the side of the item, notably the sack of sugar, so that the buyer can view a small amount of the genuine particles before purchasing it.
Speaking to journalists, the area residents said they frequently observed large trucks pulling up to offload the sugar and cooking oil in the warehouse.
Meanwhile, the Suhum police have taken the rest of the products into custody as exhibits and declared the rest of the suspects wanted.
