A fifty-three-year-old man, Adjei Owusu Afiriyie, is in police custody in the Ashanti Region over allegations that he was selling sobolo and locally distilled gin, commonly known as akpeteshie, mixed with suspected cannabis to unsuspecting customers.
The arrest followed an early morning police operation on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at a local drinking spot known as De Vicky’s, where officers say they had received intelligence about the sale of intoxicating beverages believed to contain illicit substances.
According to the police, the raid led to the retrieval of several items suspected to have been prepared for sale.
These included seven barrels of locally manufactured akpeteshie, fifty-six branded Alomo gin bottles, one barrel of sobolo, and an additional gallon of sobolo.
Officers suspect the drinks had been laced with weed, posing potential health risks to patrons.
The suspect is expected to assist police with investigations as samples of the seized drinks are sent for testing.
Authorities say further action will depend on the outcome of the analysis and applicable laws.
