Police in the Ashanti South Region have arrested a 25-year-old man, Yussif Mohammed, after discovering a large cache of ammunition and suspicious items in his possession, including a ritual smock and military uniforms.

The arrest happened near the Asankare Police Barrier with the help of community informants. Officers were alerted when a backpack fell from an Accra-bound passenger bus coming from Kumasi.

Upon inspecting the bag, they identified Yussif as the owner.

“The suspect admitted the bag was his when confronted, leading to his immediate arrest,” he said.

Inside the bag, police found 207 rounds of assorted ammunition. This included 35 rounds of CZ ammunition, 42 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, one BB round, and 16 red-tipped G3 rounds.

Other items included a bulletproof vest, two black jackets, one green jacket, a crash helmet, and some dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Officers also uncovered a traditional smock believed to contain ritual charms and, notably, two military uniforms, raising further security concerns.

Yussif remains in police custody as investigations continue into the source and intended use of the items.
