Majority Caucus requests recall of Parliament

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has petitioned Speaker Alban Bagbin to recall the House to consider urgent matters.

The petition comes a day after the Speaker suspended parliamentary proceedings indefinitely, citing the lack of a quorum as the reason for halting the session.

During the brief proceedings on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Mr. Bagbin told the House that although they had the numbers to conduct business, the House did not have the numbers to make decisions.

The suspension has sparked diverse reactions among the ranks and file, as important government businesses are in limbo.

The Majority contends that the suspension of parliamentary sessions will impede critical government business, hence the recall.

“We wish to emphasise that this request is made in utmost good faith and in the national interest, to enable the Government to discharge its Constitutional and Democratic obligations to the people of Ghana.

“The matters outlined herein are of pressing importance and require the urgent attention of Parliament.”

They urged the Speaker to recall Parliament within a stipulated 7-day period.

“Considering the constitutional and statutory provisions cited above and in the exercise of our rights as Members of Parliament, we respectfully urge you to summon Parliament for a Meeting within the stipulated seven-day period.”
