President John Dramani Mahama has called for justice for the victims of the 2005 Gambia massacre, where approximately 56 West African migrants, mainly Ghanaians, were brutally killed.

Known as “The Gambia Massacre”, the incident involved the execution of migrants by Gambian security forces, allegedly acting on the orders of former President Yahya Jammeh.

Nearly two decades later, the tragedy remains unresolved, with persistent calls for accountability and reparations.

During his official visit to Gambia over the weekend, President Mahama urged the international community to take decisive steps to bring justice to the victims’ families and ensure those responsible face the law.

“We have been following the processes regarding truth and reconciliation, and we believe they are essential for healing the pain many have endured during that undemocratic period,” Mahama stated.

Highlighting the need for further action, he added, “There are additional steps required, including bringing those responsible for these crimes to justice. Ghanaians were among the victims, and some of our countrymen were killed.”

President Mahama’s appeal underscores Ghana’s commitment to pursuing justice for its citizens and advocating for accountability in West Africa.

The massacre, which remains a dark chapter in Gambia’s history, has faced international scrutiny, with human rights organisations joining the call for reparations and criminal accountability for those involved.
