Mahama bans frivolous travels by government appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has imposed a ban on non-essential travel by government appointees in a strong move towards fiscal responsibility.

The announcement was made during the swearing-in ceremony of 17 ministers in Accra, where the president emphasised the need for modesty and prudent resource management.

“The hallmark of this government will be modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people. There will be no room for arrogance or extravagance,” President Mahama stated. “The resources you will be handling belong to the Ghanaian people, and they must not be wasted.”

To curb unnecessary spending, the President instructed the Chief of Staff to formally communicate the ban to all appointees.

“Any travel deemed essential must first be cleared with the Chief of Staff and must be undertaken with modesty—no first class,” he clarified.

President Mahama also urged appointees to avoid displays of wealth and embrace a simpler, more responsible lifestyle.

“The people of Ghana are facing hardships, and it is our duty to lift them out of this situation, not to add to their burden,” he said.

This measure is part of the government’s broader strategy to manage public resources efficiently and align with the values of fiscal discipline and accountability.
