Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, has been appointed as the Majority Leader of the 9th Parliament of Ghana.

Sources close to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) say Ayariga is set to replace Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam MP, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, whom President John Dramani Mahama has nominated as Minister of Finance-designate.

The development aligns with earlier predictions by Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, who suggested Ayariga’s appointment on the floor of Parliament on January 9, 2024.

In his remarks, Afenyo-Markin had also speculated a reshuffle within the parliamentary leadership, claiming that Cape Coast South MP, Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, would succeed Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah as Deputy Majority Leader. Kofi-Buah is expected to be appointed Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

Furthermore, the Minority Leader alleged that South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, would assume the role of Majority Chief Whip, replacing Kwame Governs Agbodza, who is reportedly being considered for a ministerial position. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Deputy Majority Chief Whip, was also mentioned as a potential Minister for Local Government and Decentralisation.

While these appointments have not yet been officially confirmed, the reported changes reflect the anticipated restructuring of parliamentary and ministerial roles under President Mahama’s administration.
