Residents of Ohene Nkwanta and neighbouring communities were seen risking their lives to scoop fuel gushing out of a crashed tanker on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred following a head-on collision between a diesel tanker and a Toyota Camry on the Kumasi-Accra highway.

The tanker, carrying 36,000 litres of diesel from Accra to Kumasi, was involved in the collision.

Despite the presence of soldiers and police, residents forcefully opened the tanker’s compartments and began siphoning the diesel.

The accident claimed the life of the Toyota Camry driver, who died on the spot, while the other occupant, the tanker driver, and his mate sustained injuries.

This is not the first time such a situation has occurred.

A similar incident happened in the Eastern Region, in February 2023, when residents of Obosomase defied the risks associated with fuel tanker accidents and dashed to scoop the petroleum product which was gushing out of a crashed tanker.

The tanker, which was carrying diesel and travelling towards Mamfe was involved in the accident while climbing the steep hill at Obosomase.

Another occurred in May 2023, when a Dukes Petroleum fuel tanker transporting diesel from Tema to Accra skidded off the road and overturned in an attempt to swerve a saloon car.

Some drivers plying the road parked their cars to fetch the fuel with the excuse that they couldn’t watch the fuel go to waste.
