Lizzo will bring ‘Godmother of rock ‘n roll’ Rosetta Tharpe to life in new movie

Lizzo has a lot to celebrate this year.

She released two new tracks, reached her goal weight, and now she’s set to play rock ‘n’ roll legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe in a new biopic from Amazon-MGM Studios.

The singer (36) shared the news on Instagram with a screenshot of an article announcing the movie, titled Rosetta, on entertainment website Deadline.

Lizzo captioned the post, “Black people made rock ‘n roll yeaaaah.”

“It’s finally out ya’ll. I’m so excited and honoured”.

This is Lizzo’s first time as the lead in a movie. She previously appeared in Hustlers opposite Jennifer Lopez.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973) was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 and was played by singer Yola in Baz Luhrmann’s film Elvis.

Starting as a gospel singer, Rosetta’s blend of jazz, gospel, and blues would influence rock and pop music for decades, and her work inspired the likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and many others.

The film focuses on her musical innovation and secret love for a woman as she shatters musical boundaries with her signature guitar sound.
