A lecturer and two students from the University of Ghana, Legon have been brought before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly taking monies under the guise of providing beds and rooms to students.
The three promised to provide the rooms to the students at the Dr Hilla Liman Hall of the University.
Joseph Appiah, Stephen Nimako Ansong, both level 400 students and Dr Kwadwo Owusu Ayeh, a Senior Hall Tutor, have been jointly charged with conspiracy and 32 counts of defrauding by false pretences.
Dr Ayeh has been additionally charged with corruption by a public officer.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, told the court that in October 2023, Professor Gordon Awandare, a Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon petitioned the Accra Regional Police Command to conduct investigations into an alleged ongoing bed-selling scheme at Dr Hilla Liman Hall.
Investigators discovered that the accused persons were collecting money from students, promising them beds and rooms.
A total of 32 students were identified as victims of this scheme, having paid sums ranging from GH₵2,000 to GH₵2,500 each.

Appiah and Ansong were arrested and during interrogation, they admitted to carrying out the scheme with Dr Ayeh.
Further investigations revealed that Dr Ayeh conspired with Ansong to search for students in need of accommodation at Dr Hilla Liman Hall.
Ansong also introduced Appiah to the business.
The trio collected a total of GH₵106,800 from the victims, of which Ansong has since refunded GH₵30,000.
Meanwhile, all three accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo, has granted bail to each of them in the amount of GH₵100,000, with one surety each.
The case has been adjourned to July 30, 2024.
