The Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, James Agalga, has called on the Speaker of Parliament to initiate a debate into the report on the alleged ‘IGP leaked tape’ saga.
The tape, which has garnered significant public interest, revealed a plot against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
According to the Builsa North MP, the committee has completed its investigations and submitted its report, which is yet to be laid before the House for discussion.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr Agalga, who served as vice chairman of the committee, emphasised the need for urgent action to prevent further speculation about the committee’s findings.
“Mr. Speaker, that report is ready. Before we went on recess, it was listed as one of the papers to be presented for the consideration of the House.
“Now, given the public interest in that report, Mr Speaker, I want to use this medium to appeal to you to direct the business committee to list, as a matter of urgent importance, that particular report for us to deal with it starting from next Tuesday.
“Because this thing (report) has been on the ice, it has given room for all manner of speculation about the report, so it’s high time we bring closure to that report,” he added.
Background
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, set up the special committee following a complaint by the Minority in Parliament.
The Speaker tasked the committee to investigate the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, the conspiracy to remove the current IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, and any other matter contained in the audio recording and recommend sanctions to persons found culpable where appropriate.
In addition, the committee was to recommend reforms where necessary and make such other recommendations and consequential orders as it may deem appropriate.
The conversation on the recording suggests solicitations by an unnamed influence-peddling policeman seeking that the current Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, be ousted from office so someone more sympathetic to the cause of the ruling party replaces him.
The whole plot, per the conversation, is to get the police to support the rigging of Election 2024 in favour of the ruling NPP.
