Law Students Working At The Same Time Contribute To Mass Failures – Justice Torkonoo

Chief Justice nominee Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo has attributed mass failures recorded in the final examination of the Ghana School of Law to the fact that the school is full of working people.

This, she said impedes the ability of students to fully devote their time to studies to pass their exams.

She said this during her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, May 26.

“Now many people in the law school are working and I think that affects their ability to really engage with the law and pass their exams,” she said.

Addressing a question on the struggle of many students in the pursuit of law courses and being called to the Bar, she said students are “coming out and they are coming in but I think that the journey is a struggle for working people.”

“If you recall in the last six months at least a thousand people have been called to the Bar. The last major corps had at least 860 or so people being called to the Bar. We had a mini corps a few weeks ago with almost 200 people, which is unprecedented, Justice Torkornoo stressed.

She also hinted that they are developing a curriculum to introduce an e-system in the law school as part of the gradual process to incorporate digitization in law delivery in the country.

Many have expressed concern over the alarming rate of failure of students in law exams over the years.

This led the General Legal Council (GLC) to set up a committee in 2019 to look into the mass failures recorded in the Ghana School of Law examinations.

The Committee was also expected to make recommendations for addressing the challenges.
