Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has formally responded to Ghana’s request for engagement regarding the ongoing investigation into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia.
The Latvian authorities have confirmed their readiness to receive a Ghanaian delegation in Riga on January 20, 2026.
The Minister made this known in a social media post on Saturday, December 27, 2025, describing the planned visit as an important step toward uncovering the truth and ensuring justice in the case.
“On the matter of ongoing investigations and justice for Nana Agyei, I can confirm that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to my request and indicated that Latvian authorities will be ready to receive my delegation in Riga, Latvia, on January 20, 2026,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
He assured the public that the government would continue to provide regular updates, emphasising its commitment to transparency, accountability, and justice.
“I promised regular updates in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice, and I will continue to do so,” he added.
Reaffirming the government’s responsibility to protect Ghanaians living abroad, the Foreign Affairs Minister said the Mahama administration remains committed to safeguarding the dignity and rights of all Ghanaian citizens, both at home and overseas.
“The Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life, whether at home or abroad, and we are prepared to do whatever it takes to protect the dignity of all Ghanaians,” he said.
The engagement comes amid ongoing public concern over the circumstances surrounding the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, who was found dead on June 4, 2025.
Latvian authorities initially reported that he fell from the sixth floor of his apartment building.
However, his family has challenged this account, citing a voice note he reportedly sent days before his death in which he claimed he had been poisoned.
The planned meeting with Latvian officials is expected to strengthen cooperation in the investigation, promote transparency, and ensure that the family of Nana Agyei is represented as efforts continue to seek clarity and justice in the case.
