Lands Minister orders Gold Fields out of Damang as gov’t takes over

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has instructed Gold Fields to vacate the Damang mining site, backing the Minerals Commission’s decision to assume full control of the operation.

This follows the imminent expiration of Gold Fields’ 30-year mining lease, which ends on April 18.

Despite a renewal request by Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL), a Gold Fields subsidiary, the application was unsuccessful, largely due to AGL’s inactivity at the site since 2023.

Addressing the media on April 16, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s readiness to manage the Damang mine directly.

He also moved to calm fears of job losses.

“No employee will lose their job. The government is committed to protecting all existing roles, ensuring safety, and maintaining orderly operations throughout this transition,” he assured.

He emphasised that the government will enforce all trade protocols, and any unauthorised activities or disruptions will not be tolerated.

“The transition will be transparent and secure, with continuity and protection for every worker,” he added.

The government’s decisive move is intended to safeguard national interests, ensure operational continuity, and secure the livelihoods of workers at the Damang mine.
