Kwahu Traditional Council refutes reports of Queenmother’s alleged abduction

The Kwahu Traditional Council has refuted claims that the Paramount Queen Mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III, was kidnapped during a security operation at the Abene Palace.

The Council characterised the widely disseminated allegations as completely false and misleading.

According to the Council, the security operation at the palace was initiated due to an interlocutory injunction issued on June 24, 2024, by the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

This injunction, granted in favour of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, prohibited Baffour Osei Akoto, who has been claiming the title of Kwahuhene, the Queen Mother, and others from interfering with the functions and responsibilities of the legitimate chief at the Abene Palace.

The Ghana Police Service, following the court’s order, proceeded to the palace to maintain order and avert possible conflicts.

The Council stressed that the Queen Mother does not live at the Abene Palace, contrary to reports suggesting she was abducted from there.

“No abduction has taken place,” the statement clarified, adding that those apprehended during the operation are in lawful custody and in good health.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the immediate release of the Queen Mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfuah III, following an operation conducted by certain officers at the Abene Palace on the morning of Monday, November 17.

The IGP has also mandated the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation and ensure that any officer found culpable is sanctioned appropriately.

The Palace of the Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Council at Abene was reportedly attacked in the early hours of Monday, around 4 a.m., by armed men dressed in police uniforms claiming to be from the National Security.

Residents stated that they heard gunshots inside the palace before the alleged abduction of the Queenmother, who was present at the time of the incident.

Security has since been heightened in and around Kwahu to protect residents and visitors.
