Kumawu By-Election: We Are Yet To Find Evidence Of Vote Buying – Peace Council
The National Peace Council says it is yet to find any substantial evidence of vote buying in the ongoing Kumawu by-election in the Ashanti Region.
This comes after the National Democratic Congress(NDC) and some residents of Wonoo accused the National Patriotic Party(NPP) of buying votes to sway the outcome of the polls.
According to a Board Member of the Council in the Ashanti Region, Hakeem Baidoo, who is part of a delegation observing the election, although they have received reports of such, no evidence has been provided.
“We are here to find out if it is true that the perception out there is happening, and as of now, we are yet to find any. Some people are aggressive and are saying that people are giving out money, but since we came, we have not seen that.
“Those that we saw were on television, but we have not seen anything of that sort. We are Peace Council officers, so we are careful about how we do the observation so we don’t go to places that we shouldn’t be,” he told journalists.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rt. Rev. Nuh Ben Abubekr has urged the NPP and NDC to maintain peace in the constituency during and after the polls.
RT. Rev. Abubekr said executives and the members must not cause a repeat of what happened in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, has also dismissed the vote-buying accusations against the party.
He said the main opposition party has no evidence to support their claims as his party has not undertaken such unlawful action.
He said the pre-election rumours about party executives distributing money to influence voters were mere hearsay, urging the public to disregard such unfounded information.
