Kumawu By-Election Scheduled For May 23 As EC Announces Roadmap Following MP’s Death

The Electoral Commission (EC) is set to hold a by-election in the Kumawu constituency on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

This follows the death of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumawu, Philip Basoah.

A statement from Ghana’s electoral body said it would receive nominations from prospective candidates at the Sekyere Kumawu District Office of the commission from May 2 to May 5, 2023, between the hours of 9:00 am to 12 noon and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day.

Interested candidates are required to download the nomination forms from the commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) from April 14 to May 5, 2023.

“A prospective candidate may personally deliver or cause to be delivered on his/her behalf by either the Proposer or Seconder of his/her nomination, the completed nomination forms to the Returning Officer at the Sekyere District Office of the Commission on the dates and times stated above,” excerpts of the statement said.

The filing fee for the election is GHC10,000.00 per candidate.

Meanwhile, six parliamentary aspirants for the Kumawu constituency have been cleared by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest the Kumawu seat. The NPP has set Sunday, April 23, 2023, to select a candidate ahead of the by-election.

The candidates who picked forms on the NPP ticket include the current Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Services (GHS), Dr Aboagye Dacosta; a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumawu, Opanyin Yaw Baah; Obaapa Ama Serwaa, Ernest Anim, Dr Philip Yaw Barnor, Edward Kofi Osei, Kwame Appiah Kubi and Owusu Bempah.
