The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the National Fire Service, and local community members have retrieved four dead bodies so far after the torrential rain on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, in the Ashanti Region.
The deceased were residents of Atafoa, Sepaase, and Tafo.
During the mass search exercise, three bodies were retrieved earlier and the body of the fourth person, who lost his life in search of his relative who was carried away by the flood on Wednesday was also found on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
Frank Duodu, the Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, described Wednesday’s rainfall as the most intense in the past four months.
“The rain posed significant challenges to us, as it resulted in four drownings. In Tafo, a 6-year-old boy has swept away while trying to retrieve his ball”.
“At Atafoa, a 47-year-old man was carried away along with his bicycle”.
“The third incident occurred in Sepaase, where a man drowned while attempting to navigate the flooded area on his motorbike”, Frank Duodu explained in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi.
He added, “Regrettably, the elder brother of the deceased from the Atafoa incident also drowned when he ventured into the water in an attempt to recover his brother’s body.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has urged the Ghanaian populace to put in place the necessary measures as there will be more rain in the coming weeks.
