The Kumasi Technical University(KsTU) has rescinded its decision to defer the programmes of some 648 students of the school.

The students failed to pay their fees on time to complete course registration for the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year.

A statement issued by the school said the university’s academic board took the new decision at an emergency meeting held on Monday, August 14, 2023.

According to the statement, the board has decided to organise special examinations for the affected students after the end of second-semester examinations.

It added that “only affected students who have paid their school fees in full and appropriate penalties shall qualify to write the Special Examinations”.

The statement also added that the affected students should promptly get in touch with their respective heads of departments before Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

KsTU had earlier refuted claims that it has sacked over 2,000 students for failing to pay their fees on time.

The university said those who had not registered for the current semester were asked to defer their programmes.

Explaining the reason behind its decision, it said that it had extended the deadline for students to register on several occasions, but a significant number of students still failed to do so.

The university said it has a policy of withdrawing students who fail to register, but it decided to be lenient in this case.

“Despite the Executives of the SRC setting a deadline of August 3 2023, the university added a human face and formally ended course registration for students on August 7 2023, when even the End-of-Second-Semester Examination had begun.

“After these many concessions, there are still 648 students who have not registered, as opposed to the 2,000 that some media houses had stated,” a statement from the university said.
