A former NDC Parliamentary Aspirant for Shai Osudoku, Professor Michael Kpessah Whyte, has been convicted on contempt charges.
A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, presided by Mariama Owusu, convicted the university lecturer on his own guilty plea.
He was cited for contempt following a tweet that referred to the apex court as a “stupid court” and criticized the judiciary’s alleged partisanship and lack of common sense.
The tweet came shortly after the court ordered Parliament to expunge deposed NDC MP James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records due to his citizenship case.
On this basis, the apex court summoned Prof Kpessa-Whyte to explain why he should not be held in contempt for his disparaging remarks towards the nation’s highest judicial body.
Following the summons, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte issued an apology, stating that he did not intend to denigrate the Supreme Court and expressed his sincere regrets for any pain or discomfort caused to the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court, and the entire judiciary.
He has since retracted the tweet in question, emphasizing that he did not intend to slander the court.
