Kotoko, AshGold given deadline to confirm participation in CAF Inter-club competition next season
Ghana Premier League duo Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold have until Friday, 11 September 2020 to confirm their participation in the 2020/2021 CAF inter-clubs competitions.
CAF on August 31, 2020, sent a communique to Member Associations to confirm their engagement in the 2020/2021 CAF Total Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.
Under CAF regulations, Member Associations that did not complete the 2019/2020 season, are allowed to enter the same teams which represented the said Association in the previous CAF International Competitions.
Based on that, GFA Executive Council on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, took a decision to select Asante Kotoko SC and AshantiGold SC to represent Ghana in next season’s competition.
This was because two-time African champions Asante Kotoko competed in the 2019 CAF Champions League after winning the Tier One competition, while AshantiGold SC featured in the CAF Confederation Cup last season after being declared champions of the Tier Two competition. Both competitions were organized by the Normalisation Committee.
Ghanaian clubs have been unsuccessful in their quest to conquer the continent over the past decade.
The last time a club from Ghana won in an African club competition was in 2004 when Hearts of Oak beat rivals Asante Kotoko lift the maiden Confederation Cup.
