Korle-Bu proposes GH¢5 levy to sustain children’s ICU

Management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has proposed a slight increment of its GH¢2 levy on patients to GH¢5 to cater for the Intensive Care Unit of the Children’s Ward.

According to the management of the premier health facility, about 64 percent of patients in the ICU of the Children’s Ward are unable to pay for services offered to them.

Management further indicated that those essential services are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, announced this proposal during a visit to the health facility by the Health Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, September 3, 2025

“We’re making a case to engage NHIS. We’re also proposing that we increase the levy from GHC2 to GHC5 for patients who come here [Korle-Bu]. Some small levy,” he said.

He added that, “64% of the bill is outstanding. The social welfare unit keeps them, because you cannot keep them here; if you do, you have to feed them. Here, there’s no NHIS”.
