Korle Bu blood thieves granted bail
Two persons who allegedly stole blood at the Korle Teaching Hospital have been granted bail by the Adjabeng Magistrate Court.
Kwabena Adu Twum and Wilfred Tortsie, were granted bail in the sum of GHC 20, 000 with two sureties.
In addition to the bail sum, they are to report to the police every Wednesday.
The duo pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing when they appeared before the court on Tuesday, May 25.
The accused persons are to reappear on July 12, 2021.
On Saturday, May 22, security officials arrested the suspects at the hospital at about 2:00 am.
Management of the hospital said the nefarious activities of the duo came to the attention of its security officers upon a tip-off.
“They were arrested on the Surgical third floor when they made the attempt to steal several pints of blood that had been mobilized for various surgical procedures”, the hospital’s administration said in a statement.
One of the suspects was seen wearing a laboratory coat in disguise as a health professional.
He was in possession of some stolen pints of blood, while his other accomplice sat in a 2018-registered Daewoo Matiz outside waiting for him at the car park around the administration block of the hospital.
The security officials at the country’s premier hospital carried out a special operation upon a tip-off, leading to their arrest.
Management subsequently entreated staff to be vigilant when they see any suspicious activity at the hospital and immediately alert security officials.
