Two construction workers at the Koforidua Jackson Park redevelopment project have been injured after the cantilever roof on a portion of the park collapsed on them.
The roof of one of the stands came down after a rainstorm that lasted for a few minutes.
The two are currently receiving treatment at the Koforidua Government Hospital.
Residents who witnessed the accident questioned the quality of work on the project and expressed their doubts about using the park when completed.
“My school is just behind, we heard the sound, and we got worried only to realise that it was from this place. Work hasn’t completed yet, but it’s already falling off. How can I have the courage to use the recreational facility when it is completed?” one eyewitness said.
“I am just surprised,” another said. “The thing was raised too high. Assuming they had finished and people were using it, it would have been a disaster.”
Some also blamed the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly for supervising substandard construction.
“It is unfortunate that the government invested money into this new project, and it has just collapsed. I doubt the competence of the contractor. I am shocked and blame the Assembly.”
“The Assembly must take lessons from this incident and ensure that something similar does not happen in future”, another resident said.
Sod was cut for the redevelopment of Jackson Park in 2021.
The project, which was supposed to be completed in 12 months, is yet to be completed a year after it was awarded.
When completed, the project would have a car park, shops, a recreational centre and spaces for social activities.
The redevelopment forms part of a five-year project development plan under the Ghana Secondary City Development funded by the World Bank.
