KNUST’s Katanga Hall donate to Kumasi Children’s home
Members of the University Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), popularly known as Katanga, put smiles on the faces of children at the Kumasi Children’s Home on Saturday.
The members of the hall made a donation of cash and some items worth thousands of cedis to the children at the facility to enable them enjoy the Christmas festivities.
According to the members, they are still committed to reaching out to the less privileged in the society despite the recent issues about the conversion of the school’s two male halls into mixed halls.
The conversion resulted in a violent protest by students and led to the subsequent closure of the University.
Presenting the food items and cash to the orphanage home, President of the Katanga hall, Kataba Mohammed, said the donation forms part of the hall’s responsibility of reaching out to people in deprived communities and schools.
The items included ten bags of rice, a bag of sugar, five cartons of milk and assorted drinks, two gallons of oil, five packs of water and confectionaries totaling GHc 3,000.
The members also presented an undisclosed amount to caretakers of the orphanage.
The donation was supported by the alumni of the Katanga hall.
Speaking to journalists, the hall President reiterated the need to reach out to the underprivileged in society since such persons would have to be supported to be able to contribute to national development.
Mr. Kataba said showing brotherly love in that manner was part of doctrines of the hall.
“There is being a lot of misconceptions about Katanga boys that they are just violent and rampaging boys, but that is not the case. Katanga boys have the tendency of showing love. It’s just that there is a lot of misinformation, so this being done will portray us in a different light because people will see that regardless of the back and forth about the conversion of the halls and all the activities on campus, we are still committed to our community”, he stressed.
He revealed that the Katanga Hall is putting up an E-Learning Center for the people of Kotei in Kumasi for school children in the area to improve academically.
He appealed to the alumni and continuing students to help complete the ongoing E-Learning Center for the Kotei Community.
Management of the Kumasi Children’s Home thanked the members for the gesture and called on other organizations and individuals to support the home.
