MoMo vendor murder: Woman demands apology from police for ‘wrongful’ arrest of 3 sons
The mother of three siblings who were arrested in connection with the recent murder of a mobile money vendor in Kumasi is calling for an apology from the police.
Madam Mary Kyei insists that her children were wrongfully detained and publicly showcased as suspects, resulting in humiliation and job losses.
She recounts that two of her children were taken by the police during an operation at their home, which was aimed at a tenant related to the case.
“They were arrested without any justification,” Madam Kyei stated.
“We heard noise from the room I had rented to a young man, so I went out to enquire. I saw the police arresting the tenant who lived with the girl who was murdered. My son followed me, but the police ordered that he should go back and sleep,” Mrs. Kyei narrated.
She added, “My son came outside again and was arrested by the police. The older sibling came to enquire about the reason for the arrest, and he was also arrested.”
The third sibling, who went to the police station to enquire about his brothers, was also detained.
Madam Kyei appealed to the Deputy Regional Police Commander for their release.
“I had to walk to the office of the Deputy Regional Commander to explain my story; he ordered their release immediately,” Mrs. Kyei said.
Unfortunately, this happened after their images and videos had spread widely, with the siblings being presented as suspects in the murder of the mobile money vendor.
The family reports that the viral video has brought shame and stigma, with some neighbours accusing them of involvement in the crime. Following the arrests, two of her sons lost their jobs.
“One is a driver; his car owner called him to return the car, claiming he could be a target for anybody. So he is now jobless,” she said.
“My son, who worked with an alcohol distribution company, was sacked after the release; they claim my wards are murderers,” she added.
The family is now seeking a public apology from the police to help lessen the damage caused by the video.
