Kennedy Agyapong withdraws from NPP ‘Thank You’ tour
Kennedy Agyapong, a 2024 presidential candidate aspirant, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing ‘Thank You’ tour, citing security threats to his supporters.
This decision by Mr. Agyapong follows a violent altercation in Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed.
Reports indicate that the injured student, associated with Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted by Mr. Agyapong’s team to perform at an event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.
The report added that a wealthy acquaintance of Agyapong, who was present at the gathering, provided funds to the Jama group.
However, shortly thereafter, a group of heavily built men wielding firearms, allegedly connected to the NPP, stormed the venue and forcibly seized the money from the members of the Jama group.
This led to a confrontation between the Jama group and the armed men, during which a gun was fired. As a result, one member of the Jama group was stabbed.
The injured student was swiftly taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s emergency unit for medical treatment.
In response to the violence, Agyapong’s team has filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Agyapong announced his decision to withdraw from the tour, emphasising his commitment to justice for the victim.
“Because of what happened yesterday, my team and I want to pull out because lives are threatened. I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr Bawumia can do his campaign,” he stated.
