Kejetia market fire victims chase NPP for GH₵100,000 pledge

Victims of the recent Kejetia Market fire incident appeal to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to fulfil the GH₵100,000 pledge they made to the traders.

It will be recalled that an inferno consumed parts of the Kejetia Market in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, destroying over 30 shops out of the facility’s 8,000 shops.

This led the managers to close the area for some days to allow security officials to check the structural integrity of the affected building.

Following the incident, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) pledged GH₵100,000 to support traders whose shops were destroyed.

Led by the party’s General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the delegation was at the market to inspect the situation and also interacted with the affected victims.

“Knowing the situation that they find themselves in, the party has made a pledge of GH₵100,000 to support the market women and men whose shops got burnt, at least to support them in the interim, while we know that the government will also have a package for them,” he said.

However, the leader of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Kwasi Prempeh, said the New Patriotic Party was yet to honour the pledge they made to them as leaders to share with the fire victims.

“As we speak now, we have yet to receive the GH₵100,000 monetary pledge the party made to the fire victims. Our members are always chasing us for the money, thinking that the money has already been given to us,” he lamented on GHOne.

However, he explained that the NPP’s flag bearer hopeful, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, has already honoured the GH₵100,000 he made to the victims the very day he made the pledge with what he described as ‘physical cash’.

He pleaded with the party leadership to fulfil the promise they made to the victims for it to serve the intended purpose.
