Justice Torkornoo goes to court again to challenge removal

The legal team representing former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo intends to challenge the decision made by the Committee of Inquiry, which recommended her removal from her position as Chief Justice.

Justice Torkornoo was removed from her position following recommendations from a constitutional committee set up under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution allegations of misconduct against her.

On September 1, 2025, the Committee presented its findings, concluding that she had indeed engaged in misconduct and suggested her dismissal.

In an interview on Saturday, September 6, 2026, Torkornoo’s lead counsel, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, who previously served as the Attorney-General, argued that the former Chief Justice has faced unjust treatment and merits an opportunity to prove her innocence.

“This is an option we are looking for to get the records straight. When Dr. Danquah went to court to talk about Re and Akoto, and that there was the abuse of a fundamental human right, people did not take him seriously. But today, people are praising him for having fought that good fight. So, we will go to court at the right time,” Mr. Otoo said.

Should the case proceed as planned, it is anticipated to explore the extent of presidential authority will be explored alongside the constitutional rights afforded to judicial officials.
