JUSAG Industrial Action Brings Ghana’s Justice System To A Halt

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) nationwide strike has brought justice delivery to a standstill throughout the country.

JUSAG members have laid down their tools in protest against the non-approval of their proposed salary structure for the period between January 2023 and December 2024.

As a result of the strike, several facilities, including the court complex in Accra, remained closed on Thursday morning, causing concerns among individuals who were expecting their cases to be heard.

The impact of the strike is also evident in empty lorry parks, which ordinarily would have been filled to capacity.

Stranded lawyers and clients have appealed to the government to urgently address the demands put forth by the judicial staff, emphasizing the need for a resolution to alleviate the challenges faced by those seeking judicial services.

It will be recalled that JUSAG leaders convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon to officially declare the indefinite strike after the government failed to meet the ultimatums issued regarding salary increases and payment of arrears dating back to January 2023.

The association had previously written to President Akufo-Addo, requesting him to approve the Judicial Council’s recommendation for a review of salaries and related allowances for Judicial Service staff, in accordance with Article 149 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

The government is yet to meet its demands.
