Jurors declare indefinite strike over unpaid allowances

Jurors across the country have declared an indefinite strike over outstanding allowances.

A statement released by the jurors said the non-payment of their allowances from July 2023 to May 2024 has made life unbearable for them.

According to the disgruntled personnel, they have been plunged into a point of no hope as the government has turned deaf ears to their pressing issue.

“This situation has made it practically impossible for us to continue to pre-finance our transportation to and from the court premises,” the statement read.

Despite their commitment to the justice system, the jurors say the lack of financial support has left them with no choice but to halt their duties.

The statement further pointed out that they were promised arrears would be settled in May, this year.

However, subsequent follow-ups revealed no funds were available, leaving them with no option but to embark on an indefinite strike.

“We regret any inconvenience our absence may have on the expeditious delivery of justice,” the jurors added.

Cases such as the Joseph Boakye Danquah’s murder trial, Gregory Afoko trial, and the Kasoa teen killers murder trial among others will be compelled to adjourn the hearing.

This is not the first time jurors have declared an indefinite strike.

In November 2023, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo urged then-striking jurors to return to work as their concerns would soon be addressed.

She said, her outfit was working around the clock to ensure the prompt payments of all outstanding allowances meant to facilitate the activities of staff of the Judicial Service, including jurors.

Mrs Torkornoo pleaded with them to return to work in the interest of Ghana.
