The Ministry for the Interior has declared June 28, 2023, as a public holiday.
A statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, said the day “has been declared a Public Holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha“.
The statement further called on Ghanaians to observe the day as a statutory public holiday throughout the country.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide.
It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.
According to Islamic tradition, as Ibrahim prepared to sacrifice, God intervened and provided a ram as a substitute.
The festival is observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, following the completion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
It is a time of joy, gratitude, and reflection for Muslims.
The festival is usually opened with special prayers before the slaughtering of goats, sheep or cows, among others.
