A first-year Junior High School (JHS) student of the Sarkodea Basic A School has been assaulted by his guardians for allegedly stealing GH¢50 at Koforidua.
According to sources, the victim, Samuel Agyei Tawiah, who lost his mother at birth, has been in the care of his auntie and husband.
His guardians, who accused him of stealing money from them, reportedly attacked him with iron rods inflicting deep cuts around his left eye.
Fearing for his life, he reportedly admitted to the offence under duress.
Some teachers at his school who spoke to journalists said Agyei Tawiah, who was constantly maltreated by the guardians, told them the money was given to a fellow student to get out of the grips of his auntie and uncle.
The guardians then matched him to the school to retrieve the money from the said colleague.
But on reaching the school, they could not identify the student to whom he allegedly gave the money.
This further angered them, and they beat him again in front of teachers and students at the school.
The guardians allegedly threatened the teachers who tried to rescue the boy.
This led the school authorities to call the police to intervene. The officers then escorted the victim and his guardians to the police station.
Meanwhile, the police are yet to comment on the incident.
