It’s unfortunate Assin North Constituents Have Been Deprived Of Their MP – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern about the continuous adjournment of the Assin North trial.

The NDC Flagbearer hopeful questioned why the Supreme Court has injuncted James Gyakye Quayson for such a long time and refused to determine the case.

He was addressing delegates of the Assin North Constituency in the Central Region.

“In Ghana, our motto is freedom and justice but unfortunately sometimes, the justice system does not work for everybody, the people of Assin North and for Joe Quayson.

“For such a long time, the Assin North people have been deprived of their MP representing them in parliament and a blight on our justice system that the writ that is supposed to remove an injunction on him has been pending before the court for one year now, which has reduced the size of the minority in parliament by one vote. It’s unfortunate,” he said.

Mr. Mahama urged the person responsible for what is happening to take steps to ameliorate the situation as soon as possible to enable the Assin North people to have access to representation in parliament.

The former president’s frustration stems from the fact that Mr. Quayson has been stripped of all his privileges as an MP due to his dual citizenship case.

Per the 5-2 majority decision, the apex court said that restraining Mr. Quayson for a few weeks for the substantive case to be determined “will not occasion any irreparable loss or damage to applicant or anyone.”

But the case has seen little to no progress since the apex court gave its ruling in June 2022.

The petition against Mr. Quayson was filed by Michael Ankomah-Nimfah, a resident of Assin Bereku in the Central Region.

The people of Assin North have since April 2022 been left without representation in Parliament since.
