‘Its abysmal’ – Minority leader rates performance of 123 new MPs

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has marked the collective performance of first-term MPs, calling it abysmal.

Speaking at a forum organized by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the Minority Leader revealed that out of the 123 first-term MPs only five participated in regular law-making processes in the House.

“If you were to ask me to make an assessment, I can narrow to only five newcomers who are interested in the rudiments of lawmaking.” He said

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu thinks otherwise, according to him, first-term MPs must be given time to grow.

“We need to groom them…. sometimes we need to write speeches for them to unlock their tongue because they will come with a considerable amount of stage fright”

“At the committee levels we need to attach them to certain projects so that they can learn” he argued in an interview on Citi FM monitored by theghanareport.com.

On his part, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Bantama constituency agreed with the Majority leader.

A first-term MP himself, Okyem Aboakye believes expectations on the first-term MP are too high.

“It is not easy being a first-term MP… how to access common fund, debate on the floor and juggling attending committee meetings and other engagement is not easy so we need to manage the expectations of the electorates” he added.
