Interior Ministry renews Walewale curfew
The government has renewed the curfew imposed on Walewale and nearby communities in the North East Region, restricting movement from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am starting Monday, April 28, 2025.
This decision follows recommendations by the North East Regional Security Council and was enacted through an Executive Instrument by the Minister for the Interior, Muhammed Muntaka.
Authorities say the measure is part of efforts to maintain peace and stability in the area.
In a statement issued on April 28, the Ministry urged residents to remain calm and cooperative. It also appealed to Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and the Youth to resolve tensions peacefully and avoid any acts that could escalate conflict.
“There is a total ban on all persons in Walewale and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons, and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement read.
This is not the first curfew imposed on the area. On February 15, 2025, a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am was initially enforced due to rising tensions.
The latest curfew renewal reflects continued concern over potential disturbances.
Security officials are urging residents to comply with the curfew and work with local authorities to preserve peace.
